When leaves come out on the fig tree, we know that summer is near. The fig tree refers to Israel. Jesus taught about the last days through the history of Israel, in which that nation, which had disappeared, is established again and puts forth leaves. Those who have heard the word cannot remain asleep, feeling secure that the world will always be as it is now. They must look into the things the Lord has made known and prepare the faith to receive the One who will come again. Just as one knows summer by seeing a tree that has put forth leaves, the Lord said, “When you see these things happening, know that it is near—at the doors” (Mark 13:29).
