John the Baptist is the one who passes the sin of mankind on by giving baptism, and Jesus is the One who came to have that sin passed on to Him. By receiving baptism from John in the Jordan River, Jesus had the sin of the world passed on to Him once and for all. The sins we commit throughout our whole lives are also within that sin of the world. Since the wages of sin is death, Jesus, who bore that sin, shed His blood and died on the Cross just as the sacrificial offering of the Old Testament was killed before the altar of burnt offering, and He rose again from death and is now at the right hand of God the Father. A person who believes in this gospel of the water and the Spirit has his sins washed away as white as snow. To say that one simply believes without knowing what John the Baptist did to Jesus is not faith but superstition. Only when we know can we believe.
