The same question is needed when we examine our faith. There may be many words to describe the place we belong to, and yet we may be unable to explain how our sins were actually removed. An answer stating that we have attended church for a long time and have a history of diligent service shows the experience of our lives. But it does not explain how we escape the judgment for sin before God. If we soothe our hearts with outward conditions without making this clear, then on the day those conditions are shaken, our faith is shaken along with them. That is why the Lord makes us set what we rely on before the word and examine it.
