Jesus told the parable of an owner who planted a vineyard and entrusted it to vinedressers. When the time came, the owner sent a servant to receive the fruit, but the vinedressers beat the servant and sent him away empty-handed. They also treated other servants shamefully and violently, and even killed them. The people who had been entrusted with the vineyard and worked in it refused the rights of the owner. The heart that sought to seize as its own what had been entrusted to them showed itself as hostility toward the servants who were sent.
