The Pharisees asked Jesus, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?” (Mark 10:2). It was not a question asked in order to be taught, but a question meant to test Jesus. They answered that Moses had permitted a certificate of divorce, but Jesus made it clear that this regulation had been given because of the hardness of people’s hearts. Looking for a clause that permits what we want is different from hearing what God wants.
