When they said, “Not during the feast” (Mark 14:2), it did not mean that they had given up their plan. They were looking for another time when they could avoid an uproar of the crowd. The circumstances in which one has become unable to do wrong and a heart that has turned back from wrong are different. If a person stops for a while because of the eyes of people and then does the same thing again when an opportunity comes, the direction of sin remains as it is. The word makes us look back not only at whether we have carried out an action but also at what intent we are harboring. We must get out of the thought that it is all right because we were not found out, and open our hearts before God.
