A confession deeper than the Son of David While teaching in the temple, Jesus asked, “How is it that the scribes say that the Christ is the Son of David?” (Mark 12:35). He let them hear the word that David, by the Holy Spirit, called the Christ Lord, and asked how He could then be his Son, since David himself called Him Lord. This question is not meant to make them abandon the promise that the Christ would come as a descendant of David, but to make them go further than knowing Him merely as the descendant of a great king.
