Let us read verse 8. “She has done what she could. She has come beforehand to anoint My body for burial” (Mark 14:8). Jesus explained the woman’s act by connecting it with His own burial. The fragrant oil she poured was used to serve the body of Jesus. In other words, this woman prepared the gospel with all her strength, and pouring fragrant oil on Jesus’ head was serving the gospel. People counted the price of the fragrant oil that was already gone, but the Lord made clear the relationship between the way of salvation He would walk and that service. Only when we know this relationship do we not regard the woman’s act as mere waste.
